camshaft end play issue 3.0 rebuild

so full rebuild on my 1980 3.0, everything going great till I hit my first issue now; left cam has 0.007"/0.178mm of end play/thrust, right one has very minimal end play from what I can tell

how do I get to my alignment of 0.25mm spec with 0.178mm of play?

have Snap-On digital torque wrench, using Elgen cams with Web Cam washer/bolt and torqued to 120nM

have Stromski tool and am very competent with measuring with mic's and calipers

this engine had issue before on the left side, in picture you can see the groove worn by the chain

anyone have any suggestions?

on outside of the thrust washer with the others? That will give me alignment but is 0.007" of movement alright or is there some other issue?

I believe .007 is within spec, hopefully one of our engine gurus will chime in to confirm. I looked in the workshop manuals for you but couldn’t find it. Was the motor apart before your rebuild? Sort of assume it was I can’t see Porsche building a motor with chain alignment off enough to gouge case.

I have shim kits available to adjust within 0.1mm.

Porsche offers a 0.5 mm shim, my kit has 4 each 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm. And a handy chart for the math....

The wear in the chain case is from a previous tensioner failure. If all the pins are tight, align the sprockets and assemble. Sprockets alignment is done with cams pushed in against the thrust plates. The cam end play is at its limit in that direction.

Camshaft Sprockets Alignment………..

The camshaft sprocket alignment is done with the timing chain and mechanical or hydraulic tensioners installed.

The camshaft end plate is probably worn where the thrust washer contacts and you may need a new one .

Hi guys, URO Parts recently developed replacement Cam Thrust Plate 930 105 196 00, and invites two or three experienced engine builders in the US to test-fit a couple in return for providing feedback for our engineers. Since the plates aren't very expensive, we could include some extra items to help compensate you for your time.

Just drop us a PM if interested!
