95mm & 98mm Mahle P&C part numbers
I did a search for this and the best I could find was that some of the 98mm P&C sets look like they may have the same part number as the 95mm sets. In fact they look like 95mm sets without the sealing ring that have been bored out to 98mm.
Is there a different part number for the 95mm and 98mm P&Cs for carbed engines? Im looking at a SC engine that has been rebuilt and there is a suspicion that 98mm P&Cs were used, but I dont know how to tell for sure. I just flipped back through the engine rebuild book and BAs book and couldnt find any part numbers, am I missing something? Any help is appreciated. |

I am not aware of any Mahle part numbers for these piston and cylinder sets. Nor have I ever seen the boxes marked well either. It has indeed been a problem before...

Thanks Wayne!
Is there a way to tell the difference between the two sets once they are on the motor? Im trying to contact the guy who spec'ed this motor originally, but I dont know how much luck Im going to have. |

![]() As a quick test, I'd grab a 95mm piston (3.0 or 3.2) and see it was loose in the bore. I have to run right now but I can measure the wall thickness of a 3.2/95mm cylinder where it meets the head and give you that measurement today. I'll probably be able to measure a 98mm cylinder later this week for comparison purposes. Let me know if you need these measurements. -Chris

Thanks Chris!
You are talking about the inner diameter of the cylinder right? The engine is complete and in running order, so I dont want to pull the heads right now. Any help or info you can give is appreciated. If you have the measurements, I'll jot them down for reference. If you get a chance to look at a 98mm cylinder, Im really curious if there are any differences externally that can be seen when the engine is already assembled. I dont think there are, but Im not sure. Thanks again! |

For some reason I thought you asked if there was a way to tell the difference once they are out of the motor. I was having a Senior Moment there. Sorry.

My 98mm cylinders were marked "95", and my mechanic told me they started life as 95mm ones.
Have a look down this thread: Short stroke 3.2
