case stud torque specs

Does anyone have torque specifications for installing case studs (not head studs) for the inner studs on both halves of the case?

My machinist pulled some of the studs to do the machine work, forgot to reinstall them, so I have to reinstall them.

Also, do I need to loctite them?

Car is a 3.3L Turbo - 1983.

You just thread them into the case. Possibly just by hand. You absolutely don't even want to torque them into the case. The only way they'll get any torque on them is if they bottom out. If you bottom them out and keep twisting you will damage the case threads.

Thanks Wayne, but none of my materials include the specs on that type of stuff, at least not that I have seen yet.

So I have no idea what the heights should be.

Anyone out there have a listing of the inner stud heights?

135mm from the top of the case to the cylinder base deck. If you get this wrong, you either wont have enought thread, or the stud will push out your allen socket on torquing. It is not even finger tight on many engines, sometimes they even have a wobble. Use Locktite 271 (Red).

Note that the original poster is asking about "case studs (not head studs) for the inner studs on both halves of the case".

I'll be done measuring a case today or tomorrow. When I'm done I can measure the length (of the exposed part) of the internal studs for you. Let me know if you need me to.

Porsche specifies their stud lengths as the exposed part i.e. a stud that measures say 47mm end to end might be listed as 35mm by Porsche. This always struck me as odd but maybe it can work to your advantage. Perhaps you can look up the studs on a Porsche parts diagram (PET) and get the exposed length that way?

Woops, I missed that you were talking about the case perimeter studs. The parts book lists these as M8 by 32MM, quantity 12.
As Chris mentioned, this refers to 32MM protruding from the mating surface, not the full lenght of the stud. A source of confusion, but helpful when installing them.

Hi Brian,
It didn't occur to me to note which case style you have. This is (obviously) a later case (late '83-89). Hope this helps.



Pelican's BBS reduces pictures some. In the picture below, the green captioned stud in the upper left reads "54mm".



If not specified, the studs lengths are 34-35mm long.

Thanks to your help, I got the case sealed up today with the help of my trusty friend Chad!

Case is sealed and pistons and cylinders are installed.
