rocker shaft dropped out -questions

I just had an unexpected surprise, and need some guidance please. I just removed my left lower valve cover on a 2.2/914 to try and solve an oil leak and out dropped a rocker shaft, conical bushing and nut. Being a rookie, I crawled as fast as I could over to Wayne's bible to see what it was in my hand. But before I try anything, I thought I'd consult the PP Oracle.

Questions:
[1] Can I simply reinstall this as per Waynes rebuild procedure?
[2] Should I be looking for/expect other damage? The engine just came off a 3-day vintage race w/e, seeming to run OK, though it is noticably tired after 3 seasons [rebuild scheduled after two more races].
[3] Other than Wayne's instructions, is there anything else I should consider for reassembly?
[4] Could this explain an on track only left side oil leak?

Many thanks,
Gavin

1. Maybe, if nothing is damaged.
2. Probably not. If there is damage it will be obvious. There may be a new slight out-of-round in the hole in which the rocker shaft goes, which may now need RS seals to fix. I'd try it without.
3. Make sure it's torqued!
4. Yes.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

I had a rocker shaft back out once and it cracked the cam tower. Look for a crack around the hole for the shaft.
