Noisy Valvetrain

How loud is the valvetrain supposed to be on a new rebuild. Mine seems very, very loud. Also, when I set the timing (with the distributor) there isn't enough room to rotate the distributor far enough to get even to TDC let alone BDC at idle with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged. Anyone who knows, please advise.

Is the valve lash set correctly?

If the dist, will not rotate far enough, pull it out and rotate back one tooth on the pinion. That should put you in the correct range to set timing.

Sounds like your valve lash is too large. How proficient are you with valve adjusts? If you haven't done any before the rebuild of your car, you may want to do a search on valve ajust and try again.

Something is out of whack. You should have been at TDC with the distributor and flywheel before you every got the engine running. From that point, you can set the cam timing. You shouldn't have to move the distributor that much to get it to TDC with the timing light once you have it running. Plus, aren't you looking for 5 degree mark with the timing light?

Yes, something is out of whack and it's not the car or the light. I had the timing light knob at 35 degrees BDC! DOH! It's all better now. The valve train is quieting down a bit, too. Valves were adjusted and checked x2.

DOH on my part. Problem with my analysis sometimes is I jump to the complex solution, instead of asking the simple questions. I guess that has to do with experience.

Sometimes there are simple questions. Glad to hear everything is on its way to top performance.

Man, I was close on throwing my dial timing light in the trash. I have fallen for it SEVERAL times, not checking if the dial was on 0 deg. It all comes to me after a few minutes if I do it now, but the first time around I was puzzled ...

Cheers, George

George, maybe you should tape a small note to the light to remind you next time you get out that light. Forgetting to set it back to zero caused you a real PITA.

Doug:

There is a big mental note on the sucker now. I won't get past a first glance at the timing mark without remembering!

Cheers, George
