New Loctite... How to remove from case etc.??
I had to split the case of my aluminium 3.0 the other day before my re-build was complete. I won't go into the details about WHY I did... but the question now is... how do I clean the new loctite from the case halves, and cylinder heads/cam tower areas.
When I first dissassembled the case it was easy to clean perfectly since the case halves went through a parts washer. The new loctite seems to have adheared very well. Does anyone have any tricks or past experiences on removing the new loctite? Any help would be appreciated!!! |

Permatex gasket remover in a spray can. An off brand will also work. Basically gasket remover in a spray can.
Soak it, let it sit, then work it with a scotch brite pad or something. Brian

The factory manuals say that cleaning it off is unnecessary, that the new loctite will reactivate the old stuff. I've never dared try it (and I don't suggest you do either) but I always wondered about that.
Don't get the gasket remover on anything painted - it took the paint right off my engine yoke once. -Chris

That is true also Chris... I forgot to mention that.
I tried smearing Loctite 574 on the existing 574. It softened it a little, but not enough to matter. Brian

Thanks to briankeithsmith AND ChrisBennet, I've discovered that the gasket remover does the trick with much less elbow grease that I originally expected. It works much like a furniture paint remover. You really don't want to get it on your skin however. You also have to be very careful about the clean up process. If you are not careful when scraping the reside up, you will end up with many more hours cleaning and making sure all bits of loctite are removed from the engine case. Thanks for the info!
Does anyone know a thing or two about suspension settings???? ha!
