Steam cleaner for engine case?
![]() Has anyone ever used one of these to clean their engine case? Do they work or should I just buy more carb cleaner and keep scrubbing? Case is about 90% clean already, I just want to finish it up without going through too many more cans of carb cleaner and engine degreaser. TIA |

Sherman, I used brake cleaner, as many on this board do. It seems to be under higher pressure in the can and does a much better job of dissolving the gunk inside and outside your engine. Evaporates faster and is cheaper than carb cleaner which really only does a good job of dissolving gas varnish.

Thanks Kurt! I'll go to the brake cleaner instead of the carb cleaner.
Is your case still pretty dry? |

Brake cleaner is still pretty nasty stuff and not particularily safe to the environment. I've started to use odor-free denatured mineral spirits (about $5/gallon at east coast paint stores) in a standard Harbor Freight tools parts washer and it really cuts the grime well.

I have one of those $20 steam cleaners. It works well as long as there is not caked on crud. use it for the final cleaning with a scotch-brite pad.
Mineral spirits and an old tooth brush will also work wonders.

Bring the case to a local auto transmission place..
They have large industrial "dishwashers" that they clean parts in.. The guy down the street from me has cleaned a number of my cases ( tranny and engine) and hasnt charged me yet. I did force $20 on him last time I had something cleaned. When you get the case home just use the brake cleaner for touch up work....brake cleaner is some nasty ****...
