Look at my cylinder wall
Dismantalling my 3.3 I noticed a mark on the wall of cylinder #5. The mark is smooth and shiny. The cylinder is a low milage Nikasil.
![]() Any ideas what may have caused this? and do I need a new cylinder or will this hone out? Steve

If you can't feel it with your fingernail ("smooth and shiny") you're fine.
In the picture it looks like a line drawn with a permanent marker. -Chris

Permanant marker (Sharpie) will easily come off with acetone or alcohol, not the kind found in bottles and cans.

![]() Was that there when you disassembled the motor? Are the other cylinders marked 2-6? |

It looks very close to the area of your top compression ring. I suggest pulling the piston and inspecting the ring for a shiney spot. It may have been a defect on the gap portion of the ring that caused the polished line on the cylinder. Is it a black line or the end result of something rubbing hard enough to wear the cross hatch pattern down and leaving a very smooth relective surface?

It looks like a black line in the photograph but is really a mirror smooth part of the cylinder wall. I agree that it appears to run close to the top of the cylinder and that its track would be very close to that of the top ring. Can't feel it with a finger nail.
I have a new set of geotze rings to go in so I'll pull the piston out and inspect the rings. It is odd that it has a slight yet well defined "squiggle" to it. The valves look ok, I can't see any eveidence of a foreign object.
