Top End Rebuild Questions
I have an 82SC with 105,000 miles torn down to the short block to replace the head studs and repair some oil leaks. The Alusil cylinders and pistons were removed as an assembly as recommend by Waynes book. After reading multiple threads on this subject, I decided not to chance any problems.
Should any prep work be done to the cylinders/pistons prior to reinstallation? Also, Wayne has listed rod bearings and bushings as "must" replace items. Is this a generally accepted practice when performing a top end rebuild? Thanks, Walt

Walt,
What you are currently doing is not a Top End Rebuild. You are replacing studs and gaskets. I'm not saying this is bad just saying there is alot more involved in a rebuild. Since you have the engine apart it would be a good idea to check at least one rod bearing. #2 and #5 get the least oil pressure and so I'd check one of them. You must replace any rod bolts you remove in this process. You are looking at how much wear the bearings show. Obviously you want to be careful to not drop any rod bolts or nuts into the case unless you want to split the case. I would pull the pistons out to check the rings for wear and breakage. You can also clean up the pistons at this time. When I do this I note the position of the rings so I can install them in the same orientation as they came out. You should evaluate the valve guides or take a head to a shop that can evaluate the guides. It would be a shame to put the engine back together with a broken ring or worn out valve guides. If you do these things and the items are within wear limits you have done a proper Top End Rebuild. -Andy
