Is Wenol the best for this?
I am just starting the process of pulling the engine and tranny for the first time. I need to rebuild the tranny and maybe install a heater. I recently purchased this car from the east coast. From the pictures you will see the surface corrosion on the mag and aluminum surfaces. I would like to clean this up. Is Wenol the best product for this purpose?
The engine runs great, so no tear down there, except for adjusting valves. So, I will have the valve covers off to polish. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have read many threads on the rebuild topic, but you guys may be seeing a lot of me in the next few weeks to help this newbie. Happy Holidays. |

That engine is quite clean, did you degrease it or something?

No I did not degrease it. It came this way. The stains on the muffler are from rust eater i put on the exhaust studs for removal . There is quit a bit of surface corrosion and I want remove it. Thought I would use wenol product to get it clean.

What I see in the pictures is just how these motors normally look.
I would recommend getting some bigger/taller jackstands rather than stacking jack stands on top of something else. The tall ones really convenient as well as being safer. -Chris

Thanks very much for your safety tip. I am always looking for the safest way to do things. To help ease your concerns the stands are situated on welded 2" square tubing jack stand extensions. The car is lifted 30" as measred from the bottom part of the rear bumper. I also fabricated a custom attachment to an ATV lift to lower the engine and tranny. I wanted plenty of room to drop the two. I use to be a certified welder and would trust my life with my welds. As for cleaning the engine, the corrosion is not real visable in the photos. I decide to order some Wenol. My plan is to detail the engine, engine compartment, suspension parts and uderbody, while the car is lifted and the engine is out. By the way. Yes, those are Turbo lower valve covers. "Turbo covers, ribbed for her pleasure." Even those can warp so check them for flatness if you have leaks. People tend to overtighten them to stop a leak and warp them in the process. The torque on those nuts is very low.
