Do i need to take out End caps on Camshaft housings to clean?
While cleaning my engine tonight, the following question arose.
My camshaft housings were pretty dirty and a lot of sand and dirt covered them. I cleaned them with degreaser and petroleum. They are pretty clean now, but there's one spot where it's nearly impossible to clean with cloth and that's the central bore with the end cap in there. Do you need to take out the end cap and clean and use a new end cap or are there other methods to clean this area? Thanks for your info. |

My left side is easier to clean as it has no cap (drive for mfi pump). So it is probably worthwhile to tap the cap out. I bet it can be reused. While you are in there, do pull the spray bars, there might be some dirt in there also.

Hell, I went as far as removing the spray bars, but thats just probably my OCD at work.

I agree remove everything, spray bars included. To replace the plugs on the spraybars I would suggest tapping the ends and screwing in a plug rather than pressing in a new Al plug.

The part number of the "freeze plug" style end of cam cap is
930 105 161 00 For the spraybars, I just remove the plugs and clean the spray bar in place. The factory spray bar plugs are cheap. Part # 901 105 379 00 -Chris

I am with snowman.Makes it ez next time.....just make sure it is a "pipe plug" or she will leak (tapered)

How do you remove the spraybars. Just tap the end cap untill it pops out on the other side.

Look inside the spraybar before you pull. On 964's at least, there is a locating pin in there that would keep you from pulling the spray bars out (unless you removed the pin first). I don't recall if the earlier motors have this setup.

Yes its a bolt with a indexing pin that goes threw a hole.
