Coil on Plug
In the 911 tech forum I saw a picture of a 911 engine outfitted with "Coil on Plug". Any recent rebuilds out there using these and which brands will fit a Porsche engine?

I looked into COP for my 911 refresh, it can be done, boxter/996 coils come to mind, and there are websites that have any of the numerous BERU connectors that you will need Kingsborne
You also have to machine the valve covers so you can secure the coils. The coil part, screws onto a connector, its simply a matter of findig the right length connector and right coil

Coil on a plug... I have seen these on the some of the later water cooled Porsche products.
I am wondering if there is some way to utilize these for a less expensive twin plug set up???? Just a thought. Tinker |

I've heard that the GM coil on plug (actually they have a short coil wire) for an LS1 engine have a built-in ignitor so they only need an ECU signal to fire. The problem is you need an ECU that can produce 6 signals for a twin plug system. So you'd probably need a signal expander to get that many signals.
I'm still on the steep part of the learning curve on all this, but from what I've found, using a wasted spark system is much cheaper for twin plug.

I believe a Megasquirt'n'Spark could do this. Still, I'd rather go wasted spark for simplicity's sake.

You only need six ignition outputs if you want to fire the coils sequentially. You can fireindividual coils as waste spark, needing only three ignition outputs.
The coils will be firing twice every engine cycle (waste spark), versus once per engine cycle ( sequential ignition)

LS1 coils are about the best thing out there for that application. You can buy them from the dealer or buy them from jegs which is real good pricing. On something like that depending on the EFI system you can run an EDIS box that will control them. FAST makes this box...I have one for my car
