She's going back together

Well, after last years racing 'incident' I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel on the engine rebuild. Hopefully back in the car in the next week or two.

Here's some obligatory pics.

New, ceramic coated 10.5:1 pistons

Timing the GE-80 cams

MFI pump

Where does one get pistons coated, and is that anything like the old flame impingement carbon coating?

Looking good . I am very impressed at the speed that you have managed to get it rebuilt. I think I need to get lessons from you - last commitment made to me was that motor and box would be in the car by this weekend and I would be able to drive down to Gouldburn next Sunday. Judging by the lack of progress by Friday it does not look very hopefull. Are you going to run at Gouldburn if the car is running in time or will you spend some time running the motor in properly?

hey rob

i think the speed is due to my spending my last umpteen saturdays in the shop doing all the non-critical tasks i.e. disassembly, hours and hours of cleaning and reassembly of the ancillaries.

your motor looked 90% down (to me) - and the 914 looks great. what are you doing for induction? howard has been told mfi is allowable in a 914 for targa, adelaide etc...

steve - we're in australia so our contacts are unlikely to help. the pistons have an oil shedding coating on the underside to aid cooling (as does my case interior) and a protective coating on the top. a google search should find heaps of places that do it in the US.

Going with Webers - would never have thought that MFI would be allowed for Targa Tas e.tc. - seems to be completely inconsistent. Think its crazy for example that we cant use an early alu crankcase but a 74 RS3.0 can use a 9 bolt crank in an SC case - go figure?

i think the problem stems from rules having to cover so many different types of cars, most of which are not as 'interchangeable' as porsches. so when you apply the rules to porsches you get some strange results.

and it only get worse when you try and build a car for more than one type of competition...

doug,

the heads are drilled for twin plug - but the distr is still on the 'to do' list.

it runs fine with single plug on our premium fuel

Depending on the heat conductivity of the oil repelling coating it may do more harm than good on the bottom of a piston.

One must not forget that aluminum is one of the best heat conductors there is.

I have also heard that some people have had problems with ceramic piston dome coatings chipping and peeling off.

I hope neither is the case but I just thought I would pass along the info that kept me from applying any types of coatings to my pistons.

we had similar coatings on the pistons i previously used - ran them for 2 seasons and they were perfect when we pulled them out.

Yup, that's some nice work that HP Coatings does over there! Did you by chance also opt for doing the combustion chambers and the exhaust ports? Did they give you any figures on how much more power or what kind of oil temperature reduction was to be expected? We've had some really good results with that combination ourselves with the coatings done by Calico Coatings (USA).

made some more progress today - its starting to look like an engine.

however, the 2nd tensioner was a bit iffy - so we decided to order a replacement and down tools.

here's some pics:
