Is my 3.2 going to go soon dut to oil consumption?
I have a 1989 3.2 with 138,000 miles. I bought the car 5 months ago and have noticed that she is consuming a quart of oil every 300 miles.I am not using synthetic either. Is there something going on internaly that I need to be prepared for? Is there any preventative messures i can take to avoid a failed engine? Should I switch to a synthetic?

That's a lot of consumption...any smoke? If so, what color is the smoke? It's not uncommon for valve guides to go on the 3.2L, depending on how it was driven (putt around=bad). You should probably be prepared for a top-end job. Synthetic won't reduce consumption appreciably, plus your motor obviously needs some work so switching won't do anything. BTW, 138k really isn't much for a 911, but of course, anything's possible.
Bad news but so it goes...could be worse.

There isn't any smoke and the oil pressure seems to be ok. Should I contact my repair shop now or what until something goes bad?

I would just start budgeting - get a couple of recommendations for shops - then take it in. Has it started fouling plugs yet? That's when I would take it in. Don;t wait too long or you have a chance to drop a valve - that tends to get really expensive.

Pull the plugs and look at the business end. If they are oily wet, you're at rings being the issue. If they are coated with white/yellowish matter, it is the guides.

You are at engine rebuild time, at least a top end rebuild. My 3.2 had 133,000 miles and also was using a quart every 300 miles, but was not smoking. I opened it up and found this:

So what should I expect as far as $$ for a top end rebuild? I'm in Orange County CA and talked with Andial and they quoted $5000 to $7000 just for a top end. This seems very high.
What is the norm for price? |

I can usually do top-ends for $1,800-2,500 (no major damage like dropped valves, etc.).
