Timing chains and tensioners?

Hi guys how long should it take to change the chains and tensioners on a 85 3.2 Carrera? Any hints or advice? Thanks.

Here in Sweden I was quoted 8 hours, with the engine already out of the car, to change timing chains.

What?? If the engine is already out of the car 8 hours is far too much time for just changing chains and tensioners.

I also thought it was to expensive, so I bought the tools (engine stand, camholder etc) and did it my self for less than half. It was quite alot of work...

If you are doing it yourself:
- Be very careful of dropping the woodruff key into the motor. Either tilt the motor (so gravity doesn't pull stuff into the motor) or stuff a rag in the right location to catch anything you drop before it can get into the case.
- Replace the chain ramps or at lease replace any that you remove. When you remove them, they tend to break the little fingers that hold them in place.

Hi CarreraUK, Just wondering...where did you get the tools for the job? cam socket, crows foot, dial gauge etc. I'm trying to source some 'reasonably' priced tools here in UK. Cheers and good luck! M

Hi Mingmong - I got all my stuff from Pelican and had it shipped over to the UK via regular US airmail. If you email Pelican for the cost of shipping it comes up cheaper than the options on their website, and it only took a few days to get here. The only problem was the duty I had to pay when it came into the UK - it was a little bit steep.

By the way, you have to go to their "rebuild wizard" to add the dial gauge to your basket, otherwise their shopping software says its not available, for some strange reason.
