300 Hp possible?

I have been thinking on a future project. Its maybe a few years ahead, but its always good to plan ahead and you might run into the right parts while your waiting...

I would like to build 73 RSR look-a-like from probably an SC, they
are common, galvanized and not to expensive.

What about the 3 liter SC engine? How much can you get out of it and what do you have to do? My goal would be ~300 NA hp. The only emission standard it would have to pass is 4.5% CO at idle.

And it cant be silly expensive.... Maybe 300 is to much to ask for.

100HP/liter is not going to make a street friendly engine....nor one that lasts as long as a street engine is expected.

Ralph built a 3.5 liter DME controlled engine for the street and he got just under 290HP...

300 NA HP? Why NA?

I don't think Ralph's engine meets the "can't be silly expensive" criteria!!!

If you want 300+ HP on a budget put a turbo on it.

Why NA? Its more RSR.

The engine doesn't need to remain 3 liter, its just a possible donor that comes with the car. I was thinking of adding 98mm nickies, but they aren't cheep....
Would it be less expensive using a different crank to add displacement?

In a post from a while back Henry built a 3.5 that put 359 or was it 369 at the wheels, all na. The 3.0 rsr was quoted at 315hp, dont know if that is crank but seems most likely.

Here is the link to the post detailing Henry's monster motor.

Thoughts on some different engine configurations

I am still planning the buildup of my own motor based off a 78sc and im shooting for 300na at the wheels.

You can get 300HP out of a 964 or 993 motor no problem.
I have a friend with a high strung Carrera engine putting out 292HP. He also has a stock 964 engine. One of the two will be sold for $7000 when he decides what he wants to do with his car and engines.
Neither of those engines will look like an RSR motor. Setting up MFI or Carbs to match the HP will be another story.

Hi guys,
I will be posting the results and configuration of my 98mm SC based engine in a couply of days. The last RWHP was about 270. I am hoping for between 290 and 300 when we have done the final EFI programing/mapping. This vehicle ia tataly drivable, and is a blast on the road. Would easily pass a 4.5% CO at idle. Fuel consumption is also incredible.
Watch this space.

True!
For the power I want I will need some 98mm Nickis with JE pistons, twin plugging, 46 mm Webers, headers and some fun cams, won´t I?
Way to expensive I guess....

Maybe a turbo after all...

Now you are seeing the light, and for a reasonable investment you can easily push past the 400 HP barrier.

Thanks to HP junkies like me there are a lot of stock 930 parts available to build up a motor that could easily put out more than 300 HP.

Like I tell the bosses at work, we can do anything you can dream up, all it takes is time and money.
Do you have an unrestricted amount of time and money?

I don't know what your definition of "silly expensive" is, but figure AT LEAST $15K if you are using the 3.0L as the basis for the project, building the motor yourself and want to remain normally aspirated. Displacement, induction, exhaust, cam choice, octane requirement, smog issues, skill of the builder and more all play a role in the final outcome. We're assuming a street engine, right?

Generally speaking, it is not unreasonable to expect 80 hp/liter and still retain street manners and pump gas (91-92-93 depending on area) without sacrificing reliability. In your instance, the CIS would have to be discarded in favor of something like carbs to get to this level.

If you have your heart set on 300 hp and don't wish to use forced induction of some type, the 3.6L swap may be the best way to go, both for cost, drivability and reliability. I'm an old skool guy though still living in the '80's and probably get flamed for this (I don't care) statement but I'd rather build a nice 3.0L or 3.2L based motor than do a 3.6L transplant. A 3.4L or 3.5L with ITB's, engine management and appropriate camshafts would be over 300 horsepower and just my cup of tea, unfortunately I would have to leave California to do it.

Thanks for everyones advice and opinions. I will need to think about what I want.

Maybe someone can enlighten my about carbs.
I have seen some Weber 40s for sale here in Sweden, the go for around $500.
Porsche Weber's are quite old, aren't they? When did Porsche stop using them, around 1970?
How many models are there and which should you buy/avoid?

LOL They've really butchered it all up but not much I can do about it as a freelancer. I submit the articles and they modify as they see fit, whether accurate or not.
