I am using 98mm JE pistons & cylinders that I got from Jon @ EBS.
The CR is 10.5:1. Good service and reasonable cost. The pistons are what are called the wedge type, similar to Max Moritz. Just be carefull if you are going to go with twin spark, as the second plug is not located in the correct place for these pistons. Check with Jon to see if there is a specific design for twin plug. |

I buy a set of 95mm JE 10.5:1. I will use single plug.

They were made for my 3.367 RSR High Butterfly / Kugelfischer MFI engine, ti Arrow rods, and a bunch of other fun stuff.

Starlifter... I think I got one of Charles' first sets at 3.4L 98mm. I am very happy with the cylinders and have about 2500 street miles on them now.

Omega looks like a prototyping shop. Sounds like big, big $$$.

Fairly big $$$ (about the same as 3 sets of Mahle's) if you're paying for the original forging, after that, the 2nd set of pistons is not too much more than a set of Mahle's, unless for some reason you fell the need for some special metal matrix pistons.
Accralite might have some applicable Porsche pistons / forgings in stock. www.accralite.com Cool Fact: Both Omega and Accralite use Hiduminium (RR58 or 2618a) and also blend in other alloys for different reasons. Strong, lightweight, and originally developed for the Rolls Royce Merlin engines. Stephen Reinhold Motorsport |

Omega makes real, real nice pistons. I've set up Nickies in the past to run with customer's Omegas, but i'm not 100% sure on how they expand in comparison with the JEs, where we have been able to snug up the clearances. I've been curious to try the forged side relief style piston (like the omega shown) over the standard slipper skirt, but again, JE states that they have to run significantly more clearance with the forged side relief style, as they run hotter (statement made by JE) and also they don't have any real world experience with those forgings on street engines.

You say: "I've been curious to try the forged side relief style piston (like the omega shown) over the standard slipper skirt, but again, JE states that they have to run significantly more clearance with the forged side relief style, as they run hotter (statement made by JE)." Might this forged side relief affect the distribution of the cooling oil sprayed at the backside of the crown? As in little or none out to the sides by the wrist pin openings? Interesting design, though. Is its virtue less weight? Walt Fricke (with some J&Es in hand and thus no $ for something else for the current engine project) |

They do weigh less, but not a whole bunch. Something on the order of maybe 20-30 grams, tops, for the piston I was looking to have made up. Oil squirters most definately will help, but isn't a sole solution to the fact that they expand more since they get hotter. As far as oiling, we've been putting forced dual pin oilers that are machined into the piston by JE to further aide with lubrication. JE's forging on the other hand takes a twist to how they increase the strength (since it runs hotter and they tend to be used in high rpm/horsepower engines. See the attached picture for comparison vs a standard slipper skirt piston from JE:
