964 Oil Pump's
After digesting most of the 964 related oil pump issues I plan to go ahead and use one in my 3.4 project. Reading these threads has changed my initial thoughts of disassembly and visually inspecting… In addition I may –
1. Penetrant Inspect the housing. 2. Possibly shot peen or glass bead the housing (your thoughts) some specific info at http://www.shotpeener.com/ 3. Port the pump for improved flow. (Steve W. made a comment about port size vs. the turbo pump). What I’m curious about is – 1. Where do the housings typically crack? 2. What’s the typical port treatment for the DIY’er? Pictures or dimensions Please… What else?

I would NOT shotpeen, much less bead blast the housing. Leave it be. I would NOT "port" the housing,........if you need more oil volume & pressure, get the right oil pump for the job. This is a recipe for trouble.

scott, what are your reasons for not using the 930 (turbo) pump? I was led to belive that it was a better overall choice for a pump upgrade as it has a the same pump size as the 964 but a larger scavenge side.

Steve, Good answer! I should have researched the shot/bead blast a little more before posting. Apparently there’s a peening process but it would likely warp this thin casting?
I see EBS is porting pumps??? Andy, Budget would be the reason… Thanks Scott

These are fragile castings that crack all on their own. I cannot envision a reason for considering this process on these magnesium-cased pumps. All I can tell you about porting these is that many shops-vendors-people do strange things that cannot be accounted for,....... I understand economics better than most people, but I would never REMOVE any material from these already marginal components. If something is worth doing, its worth doing right and the oil pump is the "heart" of the engine. Ultimately, its your engine to do as you wish but I would never do such a thing here on a customer's motor.

What about the gt3r pump, isnt it cheaper brand new than a 930 turbo pump?

I've been more than satisfied with my 930 turbo pump, but the GT3 pump is less expensive, and is also (hard to imagine) more pump and has a second (small) scavange inlet right on its bottom. Hard to pass up unless you get quite a deal on some other kind of pump.
Heavy sucker, but as Steve says, it is the heart of the engine. Walt Fricke |
