head studs

Anyone heard of the manufacturer of head studs called Canyon?

Porsche_monkey 08-12-2005 04:12 AM

No, and I would not recommend you venture into unknown teritory with a Porsche and experimental head studs. Do some searching for on this site for ARP.

DITTO

or raceware - or Supertech like I have...

Jeff Alton 08-12-2005 07:30 AM

Jeremy did I read right in one of your previous postst that the Supertec studs go in with BLUE loctite?

Jeff

Yep - that's what Henry provides - with the Supertech Head studs you have to bottom out the studs too - all the way to the bottom, then 1/2 turn.

Jeff Alton 08-12-2005 07:44 AM

Ahhh, that makes a little more semse then, I thought I was aging too fast! Got an overall first impression of those headstuds?? I am thinking of doing those or ARP but had originally planned on just using steel....

Like works of art - beefy works of art - but works of art.

I'd suggest that you carefully measure the length of the stud after it is installed. I missed this on my first engine rebuild and the allen nuts are a problem if your studs are a bit too long. If the studs are too short, the nut does not get a full engagement. I believe the length was 130 mm. It is in some obsure place in Bruce Andersen's book. If the stud manfacturer is suggesting that you bottom them in the holes and turn 1/2 turn, you may end up with short studs. I like the red loctite, you can set the stud length where it should be and it is easy to remove with heat. Good luck.

Not critical with the supertech head studs

Jeff Alton 08-14-2005 10:22 AM

I believe by bottoming out the stud and giving it an extra half turn eliminates the need for the red loctite and lets you use the blue, I think. I am guessing they do not use a barrel nut as well..... Making height not quite as much of an issue. If I remember off the top of my head (ha) the stud length is 135mm.

135mm - No barrel nut - 12 point nut instead.

Knew I had a picture somewhere...

Really? No one has heard of the Canyon studs? I have heard about them from two independent people. I will try to get more info...

Very Funny!!!! Do you use a metric wrench to torque the nuts?

Porsche_monkey 08-15-2005 01:07 PM

Such a good joke, such an arcane topic. Story of my life.

and probably the best representation of performance gains...

Unless you are building a full race killer motor, the stock steel studs will do just fine (no dilivar, ever!).
If you are building a monster go with the really expensive stuff, it's a little better than stock.
