I used a big gear puller and no heat.
Sure they are tight but a large gear puller and a bit of strength or impact wrench and your done. See my picture, and yes the engine encountered serious failure.

How did you get them back on after changing the aluminum gear?

The large gear came apart after the distributor gear decided to jump around inside my case, it produced two large holes in the case as well just below the large intermediate gear.
Pressing the new one back on was done very slowly and carefully with a wooden block and slow even taps around the entire part. Maybe not the most scientific approach but it was affective and did not harm the gear. Best Regards, Alex

To get pretty much any gear (that has a press fit) onto a shaft I heat it up with the heat gun and it drops right on. For gears that need a little help I use a piece of PVC pipe that big enough to fit over the shaft to tap the gear(s) down on the shaft.

Almost the same thing happened to me when I pulled my chain gears to replace the aluminum gear. Pullers messed the chain gears all up.
Next round was done on a press and heating up the steel gears with a torch. They let go with a exilerating PING. Ahh the monitary impact of learning a lesson...
