To Hone Or Not To Hone
Ok im just about ready to finnish my cylinders and heads, im using original nikasil cylinders and pistons with new rings, how do you know if you need to have the cylinders re honed my cylinders still bear good hone marks, should they be rehoned as matter of course or if the hone marks are still present is re honeing necessary.
One of my cylinders. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1130526312.jpg Any advice appreciated. Steve |
On my nikasil cylinders, I just used some solvent and some good sharp scotch-brite to clean and skuff up the bores. Basically just cleaned most of the crap out of the metal pores. No hone.
I installed new rings, no smokey. The rings seated with no drama. YMMV. Have you measured them to see if they are round, in spec, and don not have a step or taper? |

I have used the scotch brite method mentioned by henry in the thread he linked twice since I posted the original question. Both motors had the rings seat very well.

To Jeff or anyone, what type of scotch brite do you use to hone the cylinders and where can it be bought?
Also, what solvent is recommended? Thanks, -Rob |
I used the medium red grit one and a generic aresol degreaser. I also washed them thouroughly in soap and water to start.

Is it possible to over do it with the scotch pads or are they not abrasive enough to make the cylinders too harsh?

If I could hijack this thread a little... On these two I can see some scratches or hone marks... not sure. Nothing like Steve's though! From reading the posts in the other thread I guess I'll just scotch them?? Hope for the best. Suggestions?
#1 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1130912797.jpg #3: Expected ring failuer here, but no evidence yet... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1130912955.jpg On the other clys I can not see any hone/scratches at all. Car has 90k miles, but its an ROW so I'm not really sure. -Michael |
More important is the evidence of valve to piston contact.
Check your valves carefully. |
