Plug wire lengths for EDIS-6 twin plug?
I'm installing a megasquirt/EDIS-6 twin-plug ignition system for a 930 and am having some Magnecor plug wires made. I need some advice from those who have gone before:
1) Does anyone have suggestions about the best place to mounts the coils (e.g chain tensioner covers, firewall)? 2) How long should the plug wires be (e.g one normal length and one set 8 inches longer...)? Many thanks, Mike |

Mike,
Sorry about the OT question instead of a response - I'm considering exact same options so am wondering where do you get the crank pulley with the right missing tooth wheel? TIA...

Hobieboy,
I am going down this path, as well. I have planned installing the stock ford toothed crank wheel/sprocket to my 911 crank pulley. I have all of the parts I need and access to a machine shop. Just need to finish the engine i'm currently working on to move on to this project. i'll post pix. Al

Mike,
Sorry about the total OT. Got carried away trying to answer a question. I hate it when that happens.

I mounted my coil pack on the chain tensioner cover and was able to use the stock wires with new EDIS connectors. This was for a single EDIS setup. If you are running twin-plug, I don't think there will be enough room for both coil packs. Maybe if you mount them vertically, or stack them?
![]() I would mount them on the fire wall and use some string to determine the wire lengths. btw Mopar 6-cyl coil packs also work with the EDIS system and don't require special plug ends. I know of a Carrera running this setup.

Same question here.
I did install the standard 36-1 wheel on the front of my crank pulley with three balanced, equally spaced bolts with washers for spacers. Can post pics later. Any help on the wire length? I was planning on mounting the coils on the firewall.

Same here! How the hell do you join the connectors together with the spark plugs or can you buy them already?

If you are going to use your existing wires, just remove (cut-off) the stock distributor connectors, strip back the insulation to expose the wire and crimp on the new EDIS connectors.
Otherwise, just send me the plug wire lengths that you need and I can have custom sets made up with Porsche connectors on one end and EDIS on the other. To determine the length you need, mount the coils where ever you want them to go and then take a length of string and tape one end to the coil and route it to the plug opening on the valve covers, mark the string, then measure the distance, add a little slack - that's the length for that wire. Proceed to the other 5 or 11 wires. It shouldn't take that long. ![]()

My bad... I got a few to start down a different path.
Back to your original question - a few set up I've seen all mount @ the firewall. One of the instructors who drive with me even mounted his on the inside of the F/W - http://www.sdsefi.com/features/jan03934.htm

Mr Bonkalski is the main man for this stuff I see! Thanks alot. I think the first two q's were answered so can I also ask if you Mike can sell me the right 36-1 for my 964 with A/C and bracket? I guess you can weld on the front or rear and adjust the VR sensor accordingly.....

I have seen the coil packs mounted on the firewall. Seem like as good a spot as any.
[edit] I need to read the whole thread. ![]()

Thanks everyone (especially Mike B). Since one of my engines (I never thought I'd have two 930s torn down at once) is in my garage and my roller is 20 minutes away, I have done the following rough estimates of wire length based on the general consensus that we should mount the EDIS coils on the firewall. I went ahead and assumed we'd mount close to the center and that the plug wires would have a little slack for engine movement and wire routing. My estimates:
1 - 24" 2 - 27" 3 - 32" 3 - 36" 2 - 41" 1 - 45" It's a start. I'll let you know how it works out ![]() Many thanks again, Mike |

I also mounted the coil pack on the chain box, but I went to NAPA & bought a couple Ford wire sets, one for a V8 & one for the V6. I had just enough to make (2) sets of wires. They were cheap, like $35 or $40 per set. I cut them to length & crimped on generic Beru connectors to thread into the original Porsche plug ends.
I used aluminum angle bolted to the chain box. I wanted to keep the coil pack & wires intact w the engine, for servicability reasons. This is what it looks like: ![]() I expect a 2nd coilpack could be mounted on the Rt chain box just as easily. I can post more photos if anyone wants. ![]() |

OOps, I just realized I forgot to answer the other question.
I bought my pully w/ 36-1 & mag sensor & mount setup from Goingsuperfast.com Len ![]() Last edited by BoxsterGT; 11-15-2005 at 02:43 PM.. |
