Alternator Removal from Fan Shroud
I am in the process of tearing down my 3.0 SC motor and am stumped on how to remove the alternator from the fan shroud. I've got the fan shroud out and have removed the fan from the alternator shaft. It appears from all my parts diagrams that the alternator should press out from the shroud in the same direction that the fan came off. I've tried some gentle tapping on the alternator and also snugged up my wheel puller, but I am reluctantant to tighten down too hard for fear of hurtng the alternator.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to separate the alternator from the shroud? |

no beating on the alternator required. gravity and inertia will do it. fold a few shop rags and lay them on the floor. with the shaft side of the alternator facing away from you, hold the housing in both hands, slightly angled down toward the rags, and knock the edge of the housing on the rags. swap sides a few times and it will fall right out.

Thanks again to John Walker. This procedure worked just as advertised.
My next problem.....The fan shroud has a crack in it. The crack starts from the casting parting line along the top of the shroud and extends back across the exit guide vane. The crack goes right through the guide vane. The crack was not caused by the alternator removal, as I noticed it before the removal. I assume that this means my shroud is trash. Do I need to replace my shroud? Can I use the shroud and fan from my 2.4 Ltr motor. Anyone know where I can get a used shroud?

Check 911 Used Parts Classifieds on this bboard. Many of the folks blowing out parts have some fan shrouds.

How did you remove the fan blade from the alternator shaft? Looks like a small keyway in there. Thanks.

I was able to tap ont the back side of the fan hub with a small piece of wood and a small hammer and it came free very easy.

I know this is an old thread, but it seemed be exactly what I needed.
Tonight I started to take apart the alternator so I can Powder Coat the Shroud and Fan. I got the fan off, but I am having a bear getting the alternator out of the shroud. I have checked Wayne's engine book, Waynes 101 Project book and the Bentley. I found this post on Pelican, but instead of the alternator falling out of the housing, the core fell out the alternator. Any suggestions on how I can do this right? The alternator rear seems pretty secure in the shroud.

I use a pice of wood and hammer the alternator in the borders. Also apply some lubricant between the alternator and the fan housing. I never used heat to warm the housing. I think is a good idea to do it. The net time I will use heat.

I think I tried something along John's line of thinking but used a soft rubber mallet insteadd of trying to swing the housing.

Thanks for the information. I used a little lube and some gentle tapping and it popped. My housing has a rough spot on the inside the caused the alternator to hang up. That was one very tight fit!
Thanks guys!
