Looks like the biggest difference I can see is that the 917 engine has two rods per throw of the crank (ala american V8), while the 911 engine has one rod per throw. That and the gear drive in the middle

The 917 engine is best described as a 180 degree V-12.
Its valve train system was designed for the creation of the 916 2.0 four cam 911 engine built in 1968.
