964 3.6L rebuild - can't get 1,2,3 sprocket on camshaft
Gang:
Weird situation here. Assembling a 964, and am putting the sprockets on to set the cam timing. However, with the chain ramps on, I can get the 4,5,6 sprocket on fine, but with the ramps on, I can't get the 1,2,3 side on. The sprocket needs another 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch in order to slip over the cam, but with the chain ramps on, there's not enough slack in the chain to make that happen. Then, if I remove the chain ramp, and install the sprocket, I can't get the chain ramp back into place.... The chains we used are brand new, but I must admit, I don't remember checking the numbers when I installed them. My only guess is that 1 of the chains we received is a shorter chain intended for a different engine??? Anyone know if this is even possible? I thought most of the chains were the same length on almost all of the 911 engines. Any thoughts? Brian

I think the 964 chains are the same as the 3.2,3.0 993 etc ones....Is there any way to take some tension out of the chain with the ramps installed. It has been a while since I had a 3.6 apart and can't remember if you can take some tension out or not.... How about a pic? You may also try rotating the engine through a couple of revolutions and see if that make a difference.

No, I'll post some pics tomorrow. Have to go to a new years eve thing here shortly.
Can't seem to get any more slack out of the chain, with ramps in. I've turned it over numerous times to see if maybe there was a kink or something inthe chain, no luck. Brian

I guess the chain is not hugging the intermeditate shaft sprocket. without the chain tensioner installed there should be enough slack to get the ramp in otherwise.

Yeah, I had thought about that, but after turning it over a few times, I would have figured it would have seated onto the shaft sprocket if that were the case.

I would take all four chain ramps out again and check without the sprokets if both chains have about the same slack. Maybe one of the ramps did not get installed properly. That's about the only other reason I can see. I finished my 964 rebuild after my expert advisor had to take off. Putting together the chain tensioners was pretty straight forward from what I remember until I dropped a 1 inch plastik washer into the case. It came from my home-made chain tensioner. That was a little of a setback. It took me a day to fish it out of the case after I found it. I was close to giving up and pushing the entire project over the cliff out of sheer frustration....

Got it fixed. Looks like the chain was sitting on the sprocket instead of being seated properly in the sprocket on the intermediate shaft. So all is well. We'll set the timing when we get some free time. Brian
