How to rotate cam on 3.0l?

Can anyone provide me with the steps to rotate the left cam on a 911 3.0 to get the 930 mark to the top position. I am a bit confused on how to do it using the two books from Wayne. Do I do it with the cam nut and timing chain attached or not..? I am having a real difficult time with this step. any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I broke a couple of teeth off of the sprocket flange attempting to rotate. does this part need to be replaced?

Thanks
mike

if the engine is together, rotate the crank.
if it's apart, turn the cam with a 17mm wrench slowly until you feel interference, then turn the crank one way or the other until the cam will turn with no interference, line up the 930 mark, and turn the crank back to Z1. this is assuming you are getting ready to set the cam timing.

I assume you're not using the flange for the motor..

I rotate them using the cam-bolt. Threading it in lightly and then using my ratchet to turn the bolt...

You don't say what year motor your 3.0 is. If its the pre-80(?) with the big "cam nut" and the cams with the flats, use the cam holding tool to rotate the cam. Later ones use a bolt instead of the big nut.

Are you joking about breaking off sprocket teeth? If you actually broke off teeth you are using way too much force.

Could you give us a little history on how you got to this point i.e. changed a chain tensioner with all the rockers in, rebuilding the top end, etc?

I really did break off two of the teeth of the sprocket flange. I was a little confused on how to rotate the CAM the motor is an 83. In using the two books "how to modify" and 101 projects the 101 projects books says to remove the CAm nut in order to rotate the CAM so I did using the CAM bar and I broke two teeth off in the process attempting to use just the sprocket and the flange. As you can see I am an extreme novice in this area. As to the process I took the CAM towers and heads off together to replace a broken head stud. I did not have the $ to do a full top end but the motor only has about 25k miles on it so Ithought it was not necessary. I did replace the piston rings and replaced all of the Devilar studs with steel. Now I am in the process of trying to set the timing and re-assemble. My lack of knowledge and experince proving to be a real detriment in the re-assembly. Everyone in this forum has been really helpful. Could not have made it this far without help.

None of the tools actually operate by grabbing the flange teeth... You may be using them wrong.

I had the sprocket on the flange with the alignment pin in and used the cam bar to turn the sprocket to turn the cam and the sprocket slipped off and broke the teeth..real dumb. Do I need to replace the flange or is it ok to use as is?

I also broke a tooth...my pin sprocket slipped off while the pin was installed and pulled a tooth off the flange.

You may loose the ability to adjust timing correctly if either of those teeth border on the hole you need to place the pin in when performing the timing. I'd doubt the strength of the adjacent teeth now too.

Replace the flange....Pelican offers them for ~$30.
