Crazy previous engine rebuild

I just took apart my '66 donor engine this past week and found a couple of suprises.
On the good side - 67S Heads instead of the standard ones
On the questionable side: previous rebuild with 5 'S' Pistons + 1 906 Piston!

I wouldn't mention it, but last year I took apart a previously rebuilt 2.7 engine with 5 Mahle Nikaisl pistons and one KS Alusil!

It's odd - I just don't see how mistakes like mismatched pistons could be made by someone rebuilding an engine

Regards,
Andrew M

Same engine:

wow! I often wondered how something like that would run! Those pistons have to weigh different amounts, have different CR, everything!

Sheesh...

Reminds me of my 1969 912. When I went to rebuild it, it had a big bore kit and a 67 crank. Rebuilt back to original with 69 crank and Mahle P&Cs.

Actually the MM touch would be rebuilding your 906 with one 901 piston.

All of the internal parts measured well within spec, so MM has probably never been near it

I doubt that the piston fiascos were mistakes. My guess is those were what the builder had on hand..... Any chance you got both of those motors from the same person?

Cheers

Thats the odd thing - both motors were from totally different places -one local to Calgary, the other from California.

Wow, very odd. On the other hand, you now have a 906 piston for the shelf!

Cheers
