The Borlas run hotter than my previous exhaust (Monty). I think it's because the Borla is a lot lighter (read thinner) and doesn't have as much glass packing. It sounds nice at idle and not to loud. Didn't take note of it under boost as I was busy reading the AFR and listening for other things. I'll have to make a mental note next time I drive it.
Right now, the muffler is off and I'm putting in heat shielding everywhere under the bumpers and tin. The boost spools up a lot faster and virtually no lag. That's the biggest difference I've notice with the headers. I haven't fully broken it in yet and can't wait do to a WOT run. I'll try to do a sound track when I do. |

You mentioned it feels as if you have zero lag, but you went with a full wing intercooler, this is usually a good mod to do basically if you convert the car to Carrera 3.2 intake manifolds & EFI. Bigger is going to be better in the case of an intercooler but as you increase the geometric volume of the intercooler you decrease the dynamic responsiveness of the turbo(lag). This will of course be offset if you are running higher than 1.0 bar bost levels. Kudos to you for making it work for you. post a sound clip if you can:) once again congrats on a job well done! |

I'm just about finished tuning the AFR using the LM-1. I'm shooting for mid of next month when the engine has broken in. I'm really curious as well. Will keep everyone posted.

Well, good news and bad news...
Bad news is I had to drop the engine again...good news is the engine is making too much power for the stock pressure plate and above 5K RPM, the clutch slips like crazy. So I had the Pressure Plate clamping force increased to 3800 lbs. Now, it sticks like glue. Just had the rear dropped 1.5" because all the weight I took off when I did the engine raised the rear that much. Car is now corner balanced and cross weight is 50%. The car weighed in at 2770 lbs. with 1/2 tank of gas! Took it for a sprited drive with the PCA of San Diego this last Sat. It handles as good as my previous NSX, but with a lot more power. This thing is a blast to drive. Next week is dyno time! BTW, there are no engine leaks! :D |

Here's what I took out:
heat exchangers and assoc. plumbing (Heavy!) by-pass assembly stock air box (repl. w/ Powerflow unit w/ custom air funnel) air pump and assoc. plumbing iron PP (replaced with Al. Pressure Plate) a/c pump a/c hoses a/c condensor stock engine padding (replaced with lighter foil ones) AAR/AAV/Idle Control Valve and assoc. wirings steel bumper (replaced with 965 FG bumpers) steel deck lid (replaced with 3.8RS FG lid and wing) rear speakers and sound pad Looking to replace the steel rockers and power seats for more weight savings. Pumping my tires with Helium! ;P One really cool thing I notice (no pun intended)...After a drive, I felt the IC to check the temp. On the left side it's warm to the touch (say about 90-100?), but as I move my hands to the right, in the middle it starts to get cool and to the far right, it's actually cold (<70?)! I'm gonna find a pyro meter next time. Whatever the temp is, it's a big difference from turbo inlet to TB inlet. Whereas with my half bay IC, I barely notice the temp difference it was always very warm to the touch. |
Very, very nice with excellent and detailed pics. Your project really inspires the rest of us who are struggling to finish with lack-o-funds and/or lack-o-time.

Correction: 2770 lbs w/ half tank of gas AND a 20lbs. Halon fire extinguisher under the seat. A full tank is about 14 gal? Figure 7 lbs/gallon = ~50 lbs + 20 lbs for the FE = ~70 lbs. So car is ~2700. Woohoo.

great stuff, well done with the rebuild. how did you find using the lm1? easy to use? and how about the quality of the ic? im looking at the same unit...

The LM1 is very easy to use. Just plug-n-play. The fine tunning is a different story. Took a while to get the idle afr to 14.5, cold startup to 12.5 then settling to 14.5, and boost pressure to 12.
So far, there's no problem with the IC. If you're going with this route, you might need a different tail to accomodate IC 'hanging' out the back and fabricate custom tubing to the TB. I have an extra 45 degree tube I made just for this purpose. If you need pics, let me know and I'll snap some. |
