General Stud Nut question...
...and I ain't talkin' horses...
Aftermarket studs have no height concerns because they use a different nut that is open endded vs. the oem that is capped. So why can't I use an open endded nut on a factory stud and not have to worry about setting the height so exactly? Best regards, -michael

I don't know the absolute correct answer to this, but if i had to guess, i'd assume that no one makes air-craft quality 12point nuts in our threads size and pitch.
I could also be because of changes in the strain-torque relationship with using a nut other than that of the factory one.

That would work fine assuming they are the same size and pitch. The OEM are not capped by the way.

I've used reduce wrench size nuts (10mm nuts with 15mm wrench size) for the head studs in this application to clear the lower plugs. I don't know if it's recommended however.
Getting the head stud height correct is not very difficult. Heck, even I can do it Mike. -Chris

Hey, if Chris 'It's not my car...' Bennet can do it then anyone can!
![]() Actually, I just seem to be seeing all these posts on stud height issuses every week or two so I was just curious. I mean, it sounds easy enough, but it also seems to be one of the more frequently asked question... that, cam timing, and 'Is this part X re-usable?' seem to be frequent (no scientific data or intelligent design to back it up though). Just a thought ![]() -michael

I think that ARP has the 12-point nuts for the head studs. I'm sure they are not cheap but are available. Here are the part numbers for the nuts. There are more sizes available, the link to the catalog supplement is below. Go to page 4.
