Engine cleaning

Ok, the engine is out and I need to start cleaning the oil off of it prior to doing new seals. Any tips for what the best way to handle this? I have a parts sprayer and plan to use either mineral spirits or laquer thinner. Anyone have anything better that they have used or other suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

I've tried a number of different things, and have found mineral spirits to be the best. Does your engine have a mag case or not? Cleaning the engine with mineral spirits (as well as many other things) will remove the protective Tectyl coating on the exterior of the mag parts, and you'll want to seal those parts back up again before they start to corrode. At a minimum, douse them with WD-40. Better yet Pelican has started to carry Tectyl in one gallon cans and spray cans, it wouldn't be a bad idea to put that on the exterior of any mag parts after they have been cleaned.
