bearing case thrust washers
there is some "play" in my thrust washers.
I installed new bearings in my bearing case and replaced the thrust washers. after reassembling and rotating the crankcase I can hear some play in the thrust washers. (circled on diagram). Is there a part number for an oversized thrust washer I can have machined to work with the crankshaft? I assume the width between the crankshaft fins that lodge in the thrust washers are out of spec. I know a new cranskshaft is an option but financially it is not a realistic option. 2001 996 3.4l engine ![]() ![]() Last edited by tjonesmn; 08-12-2017 at 03:40 PM.. |

Nope....
I believe the tolerance is .003-.006" Just got a new (used) crank from DC for a customer that had the same issue, not cheap. We thought about making a custom thrust out of quality bronze, but chickened out. I have a crank .020 out of spec on the thrust but perfect every other way if anyone wants to try this.

How much end float is there?
Mark that's a curious problem you found. Had it taken out the old washer entirely or is/was there that much wear on the crank thrust faces?

Quote:
It had wiped all the babbitt material off of the one thrust, right down to the steel backing. If the engine had been ran any longer it would have wasted the whole engine. The 996 has more fail points than just the IMS.
