964 Cam-timing questions

Hi guys,
My 964 is leaking from the crankshaft seal and the cam towers - so I am thinking about this project and have a few questions.

First off - special tools needed-

Do you need to use the special tool 9290 (counter-holding wrench) to remove the head bolt and more importantly is possible to counter hold w/o this special tool and get the proper torque (170 ft lbs)? I will get the special tool/bolt 9285 to remove the pulley.

Can the cam-timing be done w/o the special Auxiliary chain tensioner (9401) this are very very expensive? Can you use the actual chain tensioners?

Can these be rented somewhere?

I have some of the other tools needed or will purchase hem - cam sprocket wrench -9191, dial gauge & holder, feeler gauge.

Any advise or words or wisdom are welcome!

Thanks all.
Earl

Earl,

1. You definitely need the 9290 tool to remove, and more importantly, tighten the bolt.

As for the chain tensioner 9401, you can use a generic steering wheel puller. The actual chain tensioner is tooo weak.

See my rebuild page for pics.

anthony,

Thanks for the reply.
And thats a great thread - I have it saved on my computer - it already has helped!!!

Any steering wheel puller will do?

Also any idea what the cost of the 9290 is?

Appreciate it!

earl

I think any steering wheel puller set would do. I would go to Autozone and look at the set to see if it would fit. Take your chain tensioner with you or do some measurements.

The 9290 tool is about $100. Pelican Parts sell them. I bought it (and most of my other rebuild tools/materials) from PP to support Wayne and the site.

You can easily resell the tool and recoup most of of the cost.

Anthony,
thanks for the info!

Have a quick question - it appears the cam tower weep/leak is from the left (top) tensioner cover.

I will confirm this is the only place , but if so can I pull the tensioner and replace the gasket w/o distrubing the cam timing?

TIA,

Earl

Hi, Does anyone know if the 9290 is the same tool for the 911 ( pre 964 ) as I can't find the 9290 on PP site?

I want the cam holding tool for a 964 ?

thanks
Ian
