Engine Number

I bought 2 Porsche engines not complete for a 914-6 conversion, one in Germany and one in USA. The one from Germany is surely an original 914-6 engine, number 6400450,with its carbs. The one from USA seems to be identical but I've only the longblock, part number 6404439, told as rebuilt and used on a 1972 911 S, the flyweehl and clutch correpond. Looking in your book, I found 2 different models with part number 640 0001! One for 914-6 and one for 1980 911 SC USA. Is it a mistake or if right, how can I be sure of the model I have?

The serial # on a 914-6 engine is located on the top of the engine by the breather. The 914-6 engine is the only engine with the number located there.
You can identify the early mag case by casting
# 910 101 102 2R
3.0 engine case casting # 930 101 104 4R
914-6

All other engines.
