Rebuild: One year later..........

Almost one year ago I dropped the engine on my '69S. I having been working very slowly but very steadily. I have spent a lot of time waiting for parts and changing my mind on what modifications i wanted to make. At first I thought I would use Webers but changed my mind and decided to go with PMO. The tranny was rebuilt by my mechanic. Probably the toughest part so far was transferring the engine from the jack to the engine stand. The original reason I dropped the engine was to fix an oil leak that was on the left side and seemed to be coming from the interface between the camtower and the head and/or the chainbox and was dripping oil down on the heat exchanger and making so much smoke at stop lights that I felt embarrassed. I rebuilt the top end, updated the chain tensioners and installed PMOs. All I have left (I think) is to put back the oil cooler, fan, oil hoses, engine cover and tin, and put back the OEM heat exchanger or get an SSI heat exchanger. Anyway, below is a picture or two of what my engine looks like today. I felt the need to share. God I hope I have not left a screwdriver or pliers somewhere inside.
Don

engine

Be sure the engine stand is secure at the case I have seen them pull threads and end up on the floor as they get heavier, especially with the mag cases.

Looks good, Mike Bruns

Hey Don, that looks great! How are you going to supply fuel? pump type, route, regulator, guage, return? What did PMO recommend for fuel press.?

Looks great, Don. Kudos on your persistence. I did notice as others have that you are using a standard engine stand using 4 bolts bolts to hold the case. Be careful now that you are adding the ancillary components to the case. The added weight has a nasty reputation for dropping the engine on the ground by stripping out the bosses in the case. The mag cases are especially prone to this. I'd hate see you ruin your hard work and a real S case in the process. I'd be propping the engine up with a 2x4 from this point forward.

Hi,
MFI is long gone. I think the oil line is from ebs. I bought the complete PMO kit but haven't had a chance to read the instructions so I don't know about fuel pressure. I guess I will use a Hardi (?) pump and set up the fuel line so it splits off as the line comes into the engine compartment and goes to each carb with a return. I assume around 4-5 lbs. The kit came with a pressure gauge. I have already borrowed some of the parts from the kit for my SC since it sprung a fuel leak when I drove it to an Eric Clapton concert in North Carolina with my son over the weekend. Kenik thanks for the advice about additional support for the motor. The Webers have gone out to Art. I still have Webers on my SC and am thinking of switching my new 914 over to Webers.
Thanks for all the kind words and good wishes.

Don

If you have the capability, you must post a video of the car once it is running. Congrats!

Hey Don, I'm sure there are many here with more experience on this than me, but I will share the following. My car came with a Hardi. It worked intermitantly, so I took it apart and cleaned it. It worked for a short while, then quit. I then went to a Facet. It lasted about 1 hour and quit. I did some research. It seems that both the Hardi and the Facet are pusher-style pumps. They like (need) to be gravity feed. I saw some photos of guys using the Holley (red) pump, so I checked them out, and decidecd to buy it. I already had a Holley rregulator. As soon as I opened the instructions, they too mention that the pump must be gravity fed. I called Holley and they said they have no other pump suitable for the 911. Frustrated, I decided to use the Holley by mounting it as low as possible in the smugglers box. So far, so good, but I'm interested in how others have solved this problem.

If you still have the MFI cam (with the gear mounting portion sticking out of the cam housing), make sure you change the seal. I have an oil leak coming from the same general region and it is that seal that I need to change.

Don,
Thanks again for selling me your Webers! Tab Tanner (my mechanic in Findlay, OH) received them last week and said they are great. We're going to rebuild them and install them as soon as the other parts arrive. I'm glad your projects are going well and I hope you enjoyed Clapton!
