As many says, the oil squirter's for piston cooling is necessary when using Nicasil cylinders - what happened if the squirter's are getting closed over time because of dirt from a rebuild ? would you get a piston seize in a cylinder if that happened ?
I'm just ready to assemble the two case half's, an have cleaned everything carefully, tested the squirter's with compressed air/brake cleaner, and they seems to work as they should. I did the first rough cleaning outside the engine before disassembling, with steam pressure cleaner, and the again on the two separated case half's .. maybe not the smartest idea, because it is difficult to control where you blast the dirt in... (As you guys know, we are driving like hell on the German Autobahn, so we need the cooling we can get ;-)) Roslin

The piston squirters came before Nkasil cylinders.
They are there to cool the piston dome, not lubricate the cylinder. They don't even open until about 45psi oil pressure, as they are meant to keep the motor from detonating at high rpm and load. Having said that, if a squirter was plugged, the first failure mode would be a burned/melted piston from high rpm/load running.

How many different sized squirters are there? Is there a formula, or a rule of thumb for determining the correct size? Thanks.

The squirters were introduced in '72 on the 2.4s. I can't find a separate part # till '78. All 911 n/a from '78 til '89 used 911.101.011.01 all turbos used 930.101.015.00, the 964 and 993 n/a used 964.101.020.00, 964 and 993tt and 993RS use 993.101.018.51. There are also oversize versions of each, flow is the same the case is o/s

If they are clear now and you've done your best to clean out the oil galleys then I woudn't worry about it. The way you cleaned the case is the way all the cases are cleaned that I know about. Just have a look in all the areas you can see and make sure you don't see any dirt. Places like the through bolt holes and the bottom of the thermostate hole.
