Z block
I came across THE main man who runs the campus machine shop and we started talking about Porsches. As I was discussing plans for my motor I mentioned the z-block used to hold the dial gauge for timing. He asked for a drawing so I sent him the link to the z-block post:

Nice job! But, can someone post a similar sketch for a dial mounting pad to be used in timing a 993?
