Henry,

Are you just getting old or did the focus stop working on your camera?

Henry and I have had a few laughs over the past two years and he usually gets me first. I couldn't resist the dig. As always his pieces are top shelf and beautiful. Henry, just be glad I'm not being a "time bandit"!

Anyone want to guess where Henry got his start turning metric bolts? Clue: this is a German made Maico radial; the best available at the time.

Sorry about the focus, I just though it was my eyes.

Let's face it, with the view slightly out of focus, you Porsche aficionados can't nit pick my work.

Anyone remember Danny "Magoo" Chandler when he rode for Maico? Henry, did you know him?

Is that Adolph Weil in the picture? I used to race a square barrel 250 Maico, dang it was about 1972 or 73.

Is that a Maico AW400? It's too bad Adolph Weil passed away a year ago. I currently own '81 Maico 490 (owned since '82) and race it in post vintage mx events.

So Henry, you used to race or wrench Maico's?

That's Ake Jonsson in '72 at the Trans-Am Series; won nine motos straight against the likes of DeCoster, Mikkola, Lakey and Maisch...

Here's another from a few years later that Henry will remember: Gaylon Mosier on a Wheelsmith Maico 400

I rode Motocross in SO.Cal from 69-81?
I started riding night TT at Ascot amd Erwindale on a Suzuki then moved to motocross.
I rode a dealer sponsored 250 Maico early on and when the first RMs came into the country (late 75 ?) I got the 2nd factory bike. We weren't allocated any RNs.
During that time, I had a Suzuki and Yamaha dealer allocated, factory paid ride.
My last bike was a factory magnesium AW sponsored by Wheelsmith.
The bike was sent here for Gaylon Mosier but he left Wheelsmith to ride for Honda.
By the late 70s I was basically just an "also rode" and a drug habit ended my career at Mammoth Mountain Motocross in 79 or so. My memory is pretty foggy from those times. I kicked around looking for rides and ended up training a want-a-be who's dad owned a Porsche dealership and that connected is how I ended up in the Porsche world.

Edit: As I said the memory is pretty weak but there was also a minute or two during the mid 70s that I spent swooping ends on a CZ from the Bike Shop in Orange.

Henry,
I had no idea you were a pro mx'er. How cool is that! Are you by chance related to Ed Schmidt?

lindy,
You rode mx, too? I remember Gaylon Moiser being really stylish and fast. The period of time when I started following mx as a young teenager was during the days of DeCoster/Hannah battles.

now I know why Henry always makes sense to me. I too cut my teeth on two wheels. All the P car air cooled people don't realize that a air cooled two stroke is even better. I was a little earlier on Yamahas, Bultacos, Montessas. Henry I know about the "foggy" days.
PS- the Supertec studs are the most reliable part of my 84. rick
