Need help with idle and backfiring

I finally have the engine starting and running with my foot on the accelerator. As soon as I let off it quits. If I keep it at about 3k for 30 seconds it then starts to backfire. I have checked camshaft position and they are both in the right position. I have tried adjusting the distributor in small amounts but it doesn't seem to change things noticeably. Same with the idle screw. Can anyone tell me about how many turns from closed it should be set at to start with.

Any suggestions welcomed. Barry 1977 911S Targa

Its more more complex than that. The expertise to bring it back to spec is hard to come by and once you someone who can set the CIS up properly, expect him to put several hours working on your car( remember the right guy will make her purr just right.

Let us know if you seek a referral to a wrench.

Regards,
