Best rods for 3.5l build
Hi guys,
I am about to embark on a 3.2l to 3.5l build. I will be using uprated steel rods, but would like to know which ones are best out of the regular suspects, Carrillo, Pauter and Pankl. I have read the famous rod thread, but people became too emotional, and the info was lost. No offense guys. ![]() Any ideas on cost of the Pankl rods, and where are they available from. Are there any specs available on the above mentioned rods, with regards to strength, and rated RPM. I know the rpm is based on piston weight, but would like to have an idea of strength. A lot of these type of motors have failed here in RSA, but possibly due to over rev. Are these motors as strong as any other configuration, using a 3.2 as a base motor. Thanks in advance. |

IMHO, I would think that ANY of the above rods are better than the stock ones. I feel that all of the above rods a probably equal or close to being equal in terms of quality.... It is personal preference.... just like running shoes...some wear Nike, some wear Sacony, both both shoes are high quality.
Some people will swear about a certain manufacturer, or their product... hell, even the stock rods have proven to be very good, if you replace the stock rod bolts with aftermarket ones.

I am using Carrillo rods in my 3.5L
its a wicked mean engine, made 278 to the rear wheels w/o any real tuning. still need to dial in the AFR's and well, according to the early results...get a bigger cam. do you have your exhaust picked out yet. if not i could probably save you some money...i am selling my barely used B&B headers w/heat . There is simply not room for a decent muffler on a mid year....however if your starting with an carrera or newer (maybe even an sc) there is alot more room for mufflers etc... keep us updated on the build, and remember to take and post too many pictures...we won't complain.

Thanks guys,
I was kind of hoping for a clear leader to materialise. I will take pics and document the build here. I am trying to break a tradition of secrecy here in RSA with regards to engine builds, and everything Porsche. We have guys admitting to having spent big $$$ (Rands in RSA) on 3.8l motors that only make the factory claimed 300bhp. I have documented the results of my current motor here on Pelican, and will document the new motor as well. I owe it to you guys, as this is where the ideas and options come from. Thanks again. |

Why do you think you need an aftermarket rod? What rev range is your cam choice capable of providing? You may be just fine with a stock rod that uses a quality aftermarket bolt.....
Cheers

Hi Jeff,
I will be using a DC44 cam, as per camgrinder. This would give a peak HP above 6500 rpm. This would give a possible shift point in the low 7000 rpms. Based on experience with my current motor, a 3.2 ss with ITB and twin plug and 993 supercup cams, my peak torque and HP rpms are about 500 rpm higher than expected. I would therefore like to build a motor that could run up to 7500 or 8000 rpm if needed. I am not looking to build a high rpm motor, for high rpm sake, but would hate to build a motor of 6800 rpm, only to find that I need another 700 rpm to reach peak HP. This motor is being built as a race motor in 2180 lb SC. Now that should be fun!!! ![]() My current 3.2 motor is strong enough to give 964 RS CS cars a challenge, if not having faster lap times. I only battled with being slightly under powered. This is the reason to build the ultimate 3.5l. My current motor is sold, and once the money comes through, the spending will begin. Watch out camgrinder, pelican, and EBS. |

Re: Best rods for 3.5l build
Quote:
We've used both Carrillo & Pauter rods for a long time and I consider both of them to be excellent and comparable products able to withstand major-league overrevs without distress. We use both in our builds depending on availability. Its easier to get longer versions of Pauter's at short notice. Pankl's are made in Austria and can be purchased directly from them: excellent product. If you anticipate extended operation over 7300 RPM, there are a host of oiling modifications that should be done. Remember, its rare that a rod actually fails; most are due to insufficient oiling to the rod bearings and the subsequent seizure that tears everything apart. ![]()

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the info. What are the recommended oiling pugrades that are required for the 3.2 case and crank. I would send the items to you, but shipping charges are excessive. You can PM me if necessary. Thanks |
