Angry Holy RTV Batman!!

I'm sorry, but is a whole tube of RTV really required??

... and could you believe that the left side was way worse!! There was a pool of the stuff sitting in the bottom of the chain housing!! Its all over the cam carrier to head mating surfaces too...

What happens when RTV gets into the oiling circuit?? Wait, don't answer that... I don't think I want to know...

*sigh*

I hate that stuff too. To me it's the sign of a hack mechanic. Don't get me wrong I use it on occasion but I use as little as possible.
If you have two nicely machined surfaces and a quality gasket then there shouldn't be any need for a sealant...

The use of RTV on a through bolt o-ring is a valid solution when a through bolt case hole is out of round.

Very small pieces of red crap travel through your engine and stop at the smallest openings.
Rod bearings, main bearing, piston squirters and cam tower spray bar. All are bad and all those circuits must be cleaned out.
When you start looking, it will amaze you where those little red worms will nest.

That's what my chain covers looked like too!

When I got down to the oil pump and removed it, it wouldn't turn very easily at all and felt like it was almost frozen up. I took it apart only to find large pieces of orange, hardened RTV in between the gears.

That stuff is the kiss of death...

You NEVER use any RTV WITH a paper gasket. From the picture above, the former 'technician' doesn't even grasp proper gasket sealing technology.

I'm suprised that he/they had enough sense to know where the cam covers were.

Basically, with all the unfortunate things I am finding in my motor I'll be taking every single screw, nut, and assembly apart and cleaning it...

I guess this will now include the oil pump...

Is it hard to disassemble and re-assemble?

Yeah, so the motor blew, but it never leaked.

It's not hard. Put the gears back together with the same orientation if you can. Both impeller gears have the same number of teeth (10?) and each tooth has been meshing with the same "valley" on the other gear since the the pump was put together.

I found what looks to be similar stuff on the valve covers and the chain cover areas. It isn't hardened though, it's gummy whether in or outside of the motor. Is it the same stuff?

It will be soft and pliable and stretch like a rubber band if its RTV. If you pull hard enough it will snap at some point and you will have collected a small bit in your hand. It has the consitantcy of silicone bathroom caulking. You can trim it off with a razor if you like.

It also makes getting the chain covers and housings off very difficult...

Yes, I must have RTV on there. The valve covers were stuck on there pretty good with the stuff. It took me a while to get every last bit of the stuff off but I did. It wasn't smeared all around the inside of the heads (valve train area)...it was contained to the sealing area so I wasn't too worried..

Should I just leave it alone as far as the chain housing covers are concerned? They don't leak and it's been this way for 11 years and 25k miles give or take.

Thanks.

Scott,

See Bobboloo's post... hehee

I'm already tearing the engine down completely so my covers/housings had to come off anyway. The usage on my engine was beyond rational, but if you dont have excessive amounts in the chain housings you may be ok... but, this is my first engine rebuild ever so your call

It's been that way for a while and it wasn't a real sloppy job, my feeling is to leave it alone until I need to get in there for something.

There are so many 'what ifs' that sometimes I need to step back and take it as it comes.

Good luck with your rebuild. It sounds like a great adventure!
