Stuck Open Squirter

Is there a proceedure for sorting out piston squirters that are stuck open? I have one piston squirter that has no resistence to flow, the fluids squirts straight through unlike the rest of them that require some pressure to open them. Im presuming this is not normal, can these normally be unstuck or do they require replacement when this happens?

I had the same thing in a Turbo 3.0. The cause turned out to be excess case sealant that found its way to the squirter valve. A glob of sealant glued the ball inside the valve to the open position. I changed out the valve to fix the problem. I don't believe that any amount of fidgeting would have freed up the ball.

I think that the excess sealant in my engine was applied during factory assembly. So, in retrospect, I would probably leave it alone, because the evidence was that my car made it to 70,000 miles with the open valve. The other five valves functioned normally.

If you're dealing with a 70s vintage engine, then it was probably assembled with the same sealant, which resembles the old brown Permatex.

Does anyone know the actual pressure that the squirters should open? ive just had a go at the other side and all the ones on that side open with very little pressure compared to the two on the otherside that require some force to get the fluid flowing, then the last one has zero resistence so now im questioning if I have 4 to replace or just the one.

Am I worrying about this too much? can it cause complications if these things open too early or as long as theres flow is it ok?

Hi Len I read that thread I even posted on it last year but that is releated to squirters with no flow what about ones that flow too easily is replacement a must? what problems could it cause? The only thing I can think is it may cause low oil pressure at idle ???

I can't find the darn thread, but I read one here on Peilcan that surmised an open sprayer might reduce pressure as you say, but also reduce oil flow upstream of the sprayers - through the main bearings. I pulled one of mine that was stuck open. During the extraction, I saw the small ball used as the valve was stuck to the side of the housing. I probably could have kept cleaning instead of replacing it. Keep cleaning, or replace it, but don't ignore a stuck open sprayer!

i also have a few sprayers that seem to pass very easily. the slightest air pressure will send a stream. not a spray. (like 5 psi) is there any way to correct this or is it back to the machine shop?

Blast them with high pressure air for a few minutes, I just changed all mine on saturday for this reason then tested them afterwards they were all fine went away then came back and gave them one last blast as I was cleaning up the case for assembly. Guess what 3 of the six new ones were now flowing with very little effort. Gave them a good blast for a couple of minutes each with 4 bar of air and they all started working fine again. I wounder if its something to do with em being left dry? or maybe small bits of dirt holding them open but whatever it is a long blast of air worked for mine. Im now woundering if I should have had a better try at the old ones before I changed them out.
