with all the development for american V8 based engines i find it interesting the modern techniques in adding hp to these engines: electric waterpumps, electric cooling fans, electric dry-sump oil pumps, electric power steering pumps, crank sensor insted of traditional gear drive distributer, etc... i have to assume the oil pump and cooling fan eat quite a bit of horsepower. however the increased head temps likely hurt hp more than the hp required to turn it. not to mention the extra current draw from the alternator to run all of those electric motors. i'm surprised there isn't more reaserch into this. i guess we tend to assume that if porsche didn't do it on race cars it likely doesn't work.

Hey John ... your reflection in the oil temp/pressure guage looks familiar....

The power required to run an electric fan of similar dimensions to the stock fan would probably work out to the same draw HP wise, but one nice thing about the electric fan would be better control of the engine temp. You could use the ECU to control the fan speed through pulse width modulation. Thus at cold engine temps you could slow the fan to improve warm up, at idle with the AC, radio, lights, etc on you could run the fan a little faster to cool better, and at high engine speeds you could maintain the proper fan speed constantly to handle excess heat production.

But running the fan electrically sacrifices the reliabilty of the belt. Plus the electrical system would have to be beefier. I haven't worked it out lately, but when I was doing a lot of research into the T4, I ran some numbers to figure out how much juice it would require to run an electrical fan vs. a belt or crank driven fan. The HP requirements were about the same.

But if it were a dedicated auto-x car. You could run the fan for a few minutes during the run with no alternator or fan to spin up. Get done with the run hook an external battery to it and recharge.
Not really very practical...... Just a thought to provoke conversation.

I believe the horse power requirements of a 911 fan & alternator range from 5-7 hp. What does a 5hp motor look like? 12" diameter / 16" long?

For all you "what if ?" guys, why not a small 7hp chain saw engine?
Just teasing !
cheers

The old beetle drag racers used to motor the generator to drive their fans while making their pass. Old Vees actually run no fan at all. Maybe you could just duct air to the car and keep moving.

JK, no one take those as serious suggestions......

Henry that is great idea. After the run you can just let it run for a while and cool the car down.
Now quit screwing around on the internet and go get my heads done.
