Thru-Bolt O-Ring help required.
I recently found out that I installed my thru bolt o-rings incorrectly on my 964 motor rebuild... I must have interpreted the instructions incorrectly and I put the o-rings on the washers and not the shaft of the bolt as I should have. Now that's the problem and I have a few questions about the solutions.
I have the motor torn right down until just the cylinders, I would like to know: 1. do I have to replace the o-rings on both sides of the bolt (just the side with the nut was leaking). The reason I ask is that I can't do both sides without removing the cylinders completely and those piston cir-clips were the worst part of the whole rebuild. I can do the leaking side (nut side, cylinders 4-6) without removing the cylinders. 2. Do I have to reseal the cam towers to the heads? I took them out as a unit all attached and it would be a real pain to separate them all and remove all that 3bond. Thanks in advance! |

1. If I were you I'd take the pistons and cylinders out together (don't let the rings slip out of the cylinders) and just take one circlip off each side of the piston. Fix both ends of the through-bolts with new o-rings. When doing this, only do one at a time...ie., remove one, replace seals, re-torque, do another to keep the torque on the main saddles as consistent as possible.
2. No need to separate cam towers from the heads.

One more item: Use Viton o-rings (green) instead of the blue. Just a little insurance.
