SC going bigger, need advises
Hello All
Im going to perform complete restoration of my 78 SC to showroom specs. Main part of course is engine which I would like to get to 300+ HP with a lot of torgue and mid ranged HP, fuel octane is 98, rare use up to 3000 per year, most for club race or events,emission is not a problem. As we dont have any specialists here in MOW who can give professional advise has to ask help from community. Actually here only 3 SC and 10-15 911 -89. Im considering the following scenarios for which I need your vote, pro and contra: Engine bore 1. Mahle 3,2 98mm P/C (3,2l) 2. 3,3l crankshaft + JE 98mm P/C 10,5:1 CR (3,4l) 3. 3.0 to 3.4 101MM Big Bore Conversion 4. 3.0 to 3.8 Big Bore Stroke Conversion 5. Nickies 102mm P/C (3,5l) Upgrades : A. PMO B. Twin plug (where toget complete set ?) C. Electromotive or similar (?) D. Open headers +muffler (which?) E. RS/RSR style short geared transmission F.Light Weight Flywheel J. Camshafts 964 ? ?? ???? ?????? What else I need to think about? port and polish? carbon hood , doors and fenders? Change engine to 964 3,6? Probably too many question , but Im in vaccuum here Will post a picture of my "start" later on Thank you all A PS If you indicate a parts source It would be great |

1st thing I can tell you is that if you want 300HP, not 275, 280, or 290 HP, you will need to go 3.6 transplant + some tweaking OR 3.6 torbo + some tweaking OR... in any event plan on $15-20K FOR ENGINE, ENGINE ONLY!!!!!!!!!!
Trans, if a 915, will need beefing up @ $1-4K. Suspension + Brakes @ $4-10K Are you willing to spend this amount for 300HP?? I havent even gone into the tub goodies i.e. 9" front fenders + 11" rear flares + might as well paint the tub at that point...call this $10-20K Its your money... 300HP from a stk 3.o SC ALONE as a build up = $15-20K ALONE!! Yeah i was thinking the same thing, stock is 190-205hp?? Good luck with your build though.

Yeah , its buys toys, especially when its porsche.
Buget does not scare me, since i love SC more then any other car I had. Still, can anyone give advise? PS MOW is in Moscow, Russia

Hi A,
I had this same question 16 months ago when I set about rebuilding my 3.2L You need to have a good look around this board as this question has been answered so many times in the past. I started out looking at a 3.2 to 3.4 conversion using Nickies from Charles (LM Engineering) but found out that 3.5's where nearly the same price so 3.5's went in but this means more machining, more £££'s Have you considered supercharging, this gives bucket fulls of torque without the lag of a turbo. This was the route I was going to go to hit the magic 300 but having spent so much on all the other goodies I ran out of time and cash. Also don't forget weight, lose as much as possible and 250bhp will give you the same as 300 in a heavier car. What I ended up with is:- 3,5 Nickies JE's (10,3:1) DC20's (Camgrinder) Twin plugged SDS (fuel and sparks) Lots of fibreglass to lose weight Haven't got it on to the rollers yet but I'm hoping for 260 to 289 ![]()

As far as cams, if you are thinking of using PMO's, you might as well go with some larger cams than the 964s - say no more than a set of DC60/GE60 or DC80/GE80 cams and at least 10.5:1 compression, assuming you have high octane pump gas available.
If you were to rather get a set of Jenvey or TWM throttle bodies and go with EFI, then you wouldn't need to get the electromotive setup (do a distributorless twin plug with coil packs!) and then the 964 cams would be just fine. You will also want to figure in for new head studs and rod bolts when switching out your P&C's.
