HI Vincent 911

"After more than 5 minutes a noise appears. It was like 2 metallic parts hitting each other. The noise started to increase"

have a look at your No'5 rocker's , poss the intake adjusting swivel is dry!!,
I usually fit the lower rocker covers and then flood the rocker gear and cam with oil to stop that noise, also pump oil down the cam feed in the cam box and check the spray bar is working?

regards mike

Anytime you have a mechanism with moving parts, there's always a chance they may not work harmoniously. However, without a specific suspect area, you'll have to inspect all parts and component assemblies for signs of unplanned interference and/or clearance.

I'll contribute a common issue for the list: Inspect the chain tensioners. Noise is most apparent at idle; decreases as engine rpm approaches 2k. If self-contained, they should be rigid. If they're oil-fed, they should be rigid as long as there's oil inside the chamber.

MBEngineering, good point!

When I removed the upper right cam cover I did noticed that the intake rocker #5 was totally dry. All the other rockers were not dry. That could explain the noise coming after 5 mintues: once the assembly lube is gone I may have no lubrification between #5 int. rocker and its shaft.

However when I rebuilt the engine I did spray compressed air and check both spray bars. It was not clogged. I will retry tonight and let you know.

Do you think I need to change the concerned rocker and/or shaft and/or adjusting swivel?
FYI, it ran only 10 seconds with this noise.

Sherwood,

Chain tensionners are brand new Carrera tensionners. I did follow Wayne's procedure when I put them in the engine.

Thanks.

HI Vincent 911
check your rockers and compare the swivels for play/movement, also check the spray bar with the cam in the cam box and a oil can, check all 3 sprays are working on all 3 cylinders.

First start issue: SOLVED

Hi,

Here is an update after exactly 1 month. Here is what I did on the engine:
1- Remove the engine
2- Remove EFI, shroud, RH cam tower an #5 head.
3- After inspection I found the #5 hole on the oil spray was clogged. MBEngineering, your diagnostic was really good, thank you.
4- I blow the bar with compressed air (which I already did during the rebuilt... but not good)
5- Reassemble everything
6- Cam timing (both side)
7- Put the engine back in the car yesterday afternoon
8- Assemble SSI + Dansk
9- General check, ffresh oil, electrical and fuel connections...
10- Starting procedure and... it started right after builing the oil pressure. It ran smooth (2000 rpm per Wayne's recommendation) and without any strange noise. So my diagnosic / reparation was good.

The only thing is that I didn't need to disassemble the engine. Anyway, now it runs fine. I need to drain oil, set the timing, re-set the rocker gaps and drive it

Thank you for your advice.

Vincent

Your experience come just in time.
I am going to put the cam towers on tomorrow and now working on cleaning everything as good as possible.
Will do another round on the spray tube. Possible use a solvent under pressure to check that all holes are open and air pressure.

HI Vincent
Glad to hear you sorted the noise and the engine is running fine, I would have pulled the spray bars out to be on the safe side, but as it is running OK best left alone and keep a check on any noise, was the cam and the rocker OK or was it just the adjusting screw dry?

regards mike

The cam and rocker was dry but OK. The engine had run less than 10 sec with this noise.
I have sprayed compressed air on both bars, just in case.
