lifting an engine
I'd like to lift my enging from the garage floor to the engine stand with my hoist. Can I secure the chain under one of the valve cover nuts on each side and then lift it up? If not what are some good areas to secure the chain to on the engine?
Thanks, Jason |

I'd stick with something more central to the engine case. Those studs are not hefty.
Wrap to the attached case mount yoke and also to the rear leaf spring (engine mount bar). My engine was on a ATV lift and I raised it all the way up, tilted the engine up to put the yoke pipe at the engine stand fitting, had my 14 year old stabilize the stand while my 16 year old and I brought it up and slid it in. They are girls around 100/120 lbs each. They wouldn't even take the beer I offered them - just kidding.

Don't use the valve studs.
Reattch your engine cross-mount and put some eye-bolts through the mount holes. THat will lift the rear of the engine. Bolt your engine stand tolk to the trans-area and lift the front of the engine with that. There's no good central place to lift with a single chain. I like to use 3 points, two at the rear, one at the front.

I would use nylon rigging straps stragically attached to the engine and hook the chain to them.

This problem is why I chose to use an engine stand with 2 front legs.
The lift (jack) will fit in between the legs and if you have one that will lift to the correct height, you can do it alone. Bob

The way I did it with an ATV jack raised to the max: I bolted the yoke to the engine, tilted the stand, engaged the yoke in the stand, and stood on the raised stand leg to tilt the whole thing back on the ground. Your results may vary...

Ask four of your buddies to help you lift it by hand. Then open the case of beer and talk about the good ol days.

We used a nylon strap from the motor stand adapter over the top to the motor mount and anchored the end with a chain. No problems.
