Date these heads
I'm curious whether these 3.0 heads are early or late style. They are dated 7/79 or 8/79. I think changeover to the new model is around that same time of the year.

May be late, are there fins missing in some corners? or are they full finned?

If you physically have them in your possession, the best bet is to measure the intake ports.

The early 79/79 heads will have 39 mm intake ports.
The later 80-83 heads will have 34 mm intake ports.

I'd ask the seller to measure the ports for you.

Same part # on those pictured as my large port heads. Assuming the smaller port heads also changed part #s then these are large port.
Is this the guy that wants $750 for them?

Actually the number that you're referring to is the casting number, not the part number. The casting number may not have changed with the change in port sizes -- they may have used the same casting with different port inserts.

John - yes, casting #, you don't know how many times I've done that - one day I'll learn
![]() Joe - nope, don't know him. I'm looking 1 or 2 large port heads and saw his listing. $750 seemed pricey and after seeing the pics I'm gonna steer clear.
