engine bay sound pad:OPTIONS
i am trying to see what people have done with their engine bay fire walls where the traditional foam pad goes.
The obvious options (to me) are: 1. leave blank and heat will enter the cabin more or less depending on the time of year? 2. install oe pad and have to replace it in 3-4 yrs when it is falling apart? 3. I recall seeing someone used some NASA looking type of cool looking aircraft quality reflective copper color? reflective foil? like material (maybe this was another one of my dreams??) Can folks post pics of what they did and why they chose this option as I am sure I am missing considering something that would greatly narrow down my choices and/or make 1 obvious choice visable. Also, what is the "compromise" here between sound deadning & heat repelancy from the cabin? I am shooting for functionality over appearance, however, I don't want something on there that looks like a clown decides on that option. Thank you! Bob

I used products from B-Quiet.com.
Hliner and Ultimate - but you might contact them and see what's new - it looks like they now have material in one sheet that is already a combination. I haven't noticed any heat coming from the engine bay. |

it was a bit of a project to get on... I ended up taking all the old adhesive off... look at some threads and do it the easy way.
I made tag board templates and then cut out the material. The foam stuff has a very sticky adhesive... anything it touches.. it will stay there I sort of made up an edging design... put cloth black tape along the edges to try and finish it off. The engine seems very quiet and was probably due to the top end rebuild in part... getting everything running smoothly.... I would guess the B-Quiet materials I used are at least as quiet as a new sound pad... |

do you have any pics of how yours came out? ANy comparative info as it sounds like you went through many considerations of materials and what to do. So, why did you use this mat'l?
Thanks for your input. Back to the B-Quiet web. Bob

I am going to try the sample pac/sheet they offer.
From what I can get from the web, it looks like the "Ultimate" is most appropriate, however it only comes in 12" wide. I would prefer to not have a seam across the middle of the firewall since I would need 2 stacked pcs of the Ultimate to do the job... we'll see... Thanks again hcoles. Any one have any pics of what they did? I an interested in seeing how the Pelican part that is described as better than OE looks and how it performs. ANYONE have this ??? Bob

I removed the pad and removed all the old adhesive and foam padding with a wire brush on a drill. Then I re-painted the engine bay. I'm not going to re-install the engine pad. Here is a work in progress picture.

Nice job Brian!!
I considered doing a re paint however, the tub color is a goldish-tan color I believe it is called zin metalic, and it is a bit too dark, thus, the thinking of possibly trying some silver colored material as a sound & heat pad. Thanks! I'll keep on searching on options. Bob

if you use the two layer system having strips on the first layer is IMHO not an issue, you can but up the material very well - the first layer is like Dynamat.
On the final layer I made 3 pieces... and put the seams in an even vertical pattern. You really can't put larger pieces in easily - there are corners that are not easy to work with I'll see if I can dig up the old pictures I have or shoot a few more. |

My plan is to clean and paint the engine bay and use the dynamat or similar product on the inside. I think it gives a cleaner look but you know what they say about opinions.

Hi hcoles... yes if you can dig up or take some new pics that would be great to see how it came out.
Hi Ed, Any specifics on choice of material... maybe dynomat... do you mean on the inside of the cabin or inside of the engine bay? I just ordered the samples of the mat'l that hcoles suggested from B-Quiet and it will arrive in about 1 wk. I will post pics when I get them as their web does not show a very clear pic of what they look like. Any pics that you guys have don would be great!! A picture is worth a 1000 words!! Bob

I bought two rolls of stuff on the net. One was thicker than the other but similar to dynamat. My plan is to pull the inside trim panel behind the rear seats and put this self adhesive stuff on the inside so I can leave the painted metal on the engine side exposed. This stuff also had a foil backing. I am not at home so I don't have the company name available right now. We have used it under carpets and inside my brother's Pantera and it seems to work well.

thanks hcoles for the pic posts. So, how do you like it? How long has it been on the car to date? Is this the Ultimate or the HD material? Is it tough i.e. wont disintergrate if your hand rubs against it while working on the engine which will create an eye sore?
Thanks Ed. If you can find what you used and let me know that would be great. Any pics of it? That is a very interesting idea of clean paint on the engine bay side and put this on the cabin side. How did this work re heat and sound coming into the cabin? Thanks! Bob

been on there about 3 years....seems like good quality material... not getting weak at this time but I'm not trying to poke at it either.... as far as I can tell the sound stopping is good, all I can hear when crusing is the faint whine. One thing is you will have to figure out how to treat the edges... you can see where I put some black cloth tape and should have done a better job.

turborat930, thanks for the input.
Can you tell me more on what the gold colored mat'l you used on your fire wall- who makes it, what are its values i.e. heat reflection - sound deadoning, what does it cost - do you like it - still in the car now - how long has it lasted Thanks for your input!! Bob
