Looking to upgrade 2.2T
I have a stock '71T with a sound engine.
I do not use the car on the track, but rather for fun on the backroads. I am interested to explore my options to increase power and maintain driveability. I would prefer to keep the original case, gearbox, and exhaust. I have a set of Weber 40IDAs for the project. HP close to 200 would be nice. Any recommendations? |

I have a 71T that I am in the 10 yr process of restoring. One thing to keep in mind is that while it is only a T, the prices of these cars keep going up. On the other hand I have seen quite a few hacked up ones on ebay go for less than 10K whereas a numbers matching T can go for a lot. A feasible option to me would be to pull the entire drive train and put in a 3.0. But keep in mind that most of the 3.0's are getting to me close to 30 years old now. Another option would be to start off with a set of SSI's and those weber's that you mentioned. Some say that the weber's are good for 20 HP. I can not really vouch for that number but they are an improvement. I still have the Zeniths on mine and from what I gather they can be tuned to run with any weber. When ever I do a project I look at the end result and see if it will add value to the car. I have also noticed that quite a few here on the board have a couple of cars one that is pristine and numbers matching and then another that can easily be fit into the Frankenstein category. I like them both.

Lots of choices depending on your budget,...
![]() Build that 2.2 to a 2.5 with E cams and those Webers. or Build a good 2.7 with either E, Solex. or S cams and those same carbs. Both will do the job with the nod to that 2.7 as torque is "King" for road work with stock gears. It just depends on your budget.

Would you ditch the stock 2.2 case in favor of an R mag case for a 2.7 or 2.5 build?

Put your original engine on a pallet and install a 3.x.

![]() Mag case preparation is NOT cheap and any of these cases: 1R-2R-3R, 4R-5R, 7R all need extensive preparation to be durable and trouble-free and one should be realistic about that. The stock 2.2 case will be fine for a 2.2 or 2.5, but I'd use a 7R for a 2.7 RS-spec motor that will see some track use. The variable here is camshaft choice and how it will be used.

Steve, I looked at your website, which has a wealth of great information. But, I could not find what configuration would produce the 2.5 liters from the 2.2.

Upgrading to 90mm pistons and cylinders with your 66mm crank will give a 2.5 short stroke configuration.
