Connecting Rod Question

Con rods out to be measured and the mechanic mentioned "rebuilding" them where some of the face on the mating surface is ground off and the the big end hole is redrilled. My question was if the big end home measures fine now (size and "roundness") what is gained by doing all this work? The mechanic seemed to well we can just measure them and see if they are in spec and rebuilding them seemed to be sort of a suggestion, apparently only needed if they were out of spec.
I guess my question is still if they measure fine, why go through all this and possibly introduce other issues. Are we solving a problem that may not exist?
Just curious...
TIA

Resizing rods is a common practice on engine rebuilds. Personally I don't do it unless they don't measure up. Have your machine shop measure them and if they are out of limits then they can re-size them. There don't seem to be issues with doing this if the shop is competent. The wear limit according to my book is .002 inches.

Garage
We rebuild every set of rods we use.
It's inexpensive insurance. Less than 20% of the used rods we see are anywhere near round.
Install new bolts, resize the big end, rebush the small end and pick somewhere else to cut corners, hopefully where it doesn't matter. Rod fitment is too critical to take chances with.

Totally agree with Henry,.......!!!

Rod & bearing fitment are very critical on 911 motors and the last place to try saving money. We too, rebuild ALL stock rods for street or track use,...........

Thanks for the advice. I should be hearing from them this week and have no problem doing it assuming they don't measure in spec.
